Study Space Items That Will Maximize Study Time

By Ashley Paskill on May 7, 2020

As a college student, your study space is a place where you spend a lot of time studying and working on assignments. It is important that this area is organized so you have everything you need right in one place so you can stay focused and not have to search your dorm, apartment, or living space for what you are looking for. To aid with this, it is crucial that you have the right office décor items to help your space be organized and keep you on track.

A bulletin/whiteboard

You likely have a ton of papers, books, and planners on your desk with things you have to get done and other information. To help eliminate unnecessary clutter from paper, consider getting a bulletin and/or whiteboard. These can be used to keep track of upcoming assignments and events as well as anything you need to do. One trick you can implement to stay focused is to write your goals for the day on the whiteboard and set aside a time to do them. Eliminate any other distractions and focus only on the task at hand. That way, you are productive and get your most important tasks done in a timely manner.

You may even decide to use your bulletin board to create a vision board for tackling your goals and visualizing your accomplishments. This is an effective way to be successful and to keep you focused on your schoolwork. Being able to have the visuals of accomplishing your dreams will help you stay on task and will help maximize your studying.

Pencil holder

Having a specific place for your pens and pencils will help save precious study time so that you are not searching around a cluttered desk looking for them. If you are feeling creative, you may even opt to make your own to match your room. The pencil holder will keep these essential study tools in one place so you know where they are and they will be less likely to roll on the ground. Just make sure to put them back in the holder once you are done so you do not lose them!

Desktop organizers

Similar to the pencil holder, having a variety of desktop organizers for things such as sticky notes, thumbtacks, dry-erase markers and erasers, pencil erasers, and other supplies is crucial for staying organized. These things can clutter your desk quickly, so having a space for them is essential. Make sure the organizer is large enough to hold all of your supplies, but not so large that it takes up space that you need for your books and computer. Also, make sure you know where things are located in the organizer so you do not waste valuable study time searching for these items.

Calendar

Even if you have a planner, it may be beneficial to have a wall calendar hanging above your desk. This will allow you to put important dates and events in one place and you can use your planner to organize the smaller tasks. Also, having a calendar handy allows you to be able to write important things down as you think of them without having to fumble through your planner or your electronic calendar. This way, you can jot it down so you do not forget and get right back to studying. There are a wide variety of calendars to meet your preferences as well as match your living space.

Pencil sharpener or extra lead

Even if you tend to write in pen, there may be a class or two that requires you to use a pencil (think math classes). There will inevitably come a time when you will need to either sharpen your pencil or add lead to your mechanical pencil. Having extra lead or a pencil sharpener is crucial so you are not caught off guard, especially in the middle of an assignment or studying.

A lamp

If you plan on studying at night or if your living space does not have adequate lighting, having a lamp to light your desk is a necessity. You need to be able to see what you are reading and working on so that you do not misread something or write something incorrectly. Find a lamp that fits with your living space. Be sure to use LED light bulbs in your lamp to help the environment. You may have lighting on your ceiling, but adding a lamp can only give you more light.

Trashcan

Having a trashcan nearby your desk is essential. If you have something to throw away but you need to go across the room or into another room, you will likely get distracted from your work. Getting back into your workflow can take time, especially if you see other things you want to do instead of studying and doing homework. However, if you have a trashcan right near your desk or study space, you can stay focused and not break your “zone.”

There are a lot of tips out there for better study habits, but before you even sit down to study, it is essential that you have everything you need right there so you do not have to spend a lot of time refocusing. Having items like the ones mentioned above can help you get into a workflow and get more done in a sitting.
