Bored? Check Out FSU's Askew Student Life Center

By Thomas Hart on January 18, 2020

Let’s start with the scenario: you’ve just gotten out of class, something really boring and awful like the History of Text Technologies or College Algebra. You’re crossing Landis Green and you cry out in your soul, “I just wish there was a place where I could rent board games for free on specific nights or watch free movies sometimes prefaced with memes to relieve stress!”

I know. We’ve all been there.

Which is why you’re lucky to traverse the very same campus that is home to the Askew Student Life Center (ASLC). Located near the Health and Wellness Center, this building hosts many incredible and inclusive events that every Florida State University (FSU) student should be aware of! It would be great if there was an article detailing some of those very events. Someone should write that.

Okay, it’s me; I’m the one who’s going to write that.

First thing’s first: let’s talk about movies. The ASLC shows movies every week at various times that are listed in the building itself on various sandwich boards, as well as on the ASLC’s website. If you’re ever hungry for more information on what movies are coming up, those are your best sources for information.

A screencap taken from the ASLC’s webpage, which details all of its upcoming events.

The movies come in two flavors: the standard premieres and the midnight screenings. Standard premieres happen typically around seven or ten o’clock at night and the choices of movie range from serious art house films to campy superhero movies. Often the ASLC will host screenings of movies that premiered on the big screen a few months prior, giving a chance for students who may have missed the release of a film in theaters to see it for free in the student cinema.

The midnight screenings are a bit more interesting. The movies chosen to be shown for these are often movies that live in a sort of… infamy, to put it one way. Movies like Black Dynamite, The Room, and Shaolin Soccer were all flicks shown in midnight screenings of semesters past and coming up for the next month are movies like Jennifer’s Body and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 2. My favorite thing about these screenings is that before the movie starts, a highlight reel of memes made by the film club about the movie that is about to play will be shown, and it’s the perfect appetizer for what’s to come.

However, if movies aren’t your thing and you want something slightly more involved to waste your time with, there are plenty of events focused around playing games, video and otherwise. The real highlights here have got to be Tabletop Tuesday and the plethora of video game events, like Throwdown Thursday and Final Friday. Tabletop Tuesday is just as it sounds: every other Tuesday, a table is set up in the Cyber Café portion of the ASLC that supports a wide selection of rent-able board games. And I truly do mean wide. From Sorry to Settlers of Catan to Cards Against Humanity, you can find just about anything.

The video game events are also fun if a bit more niche. To summarize the two I mentioned earlier, Throwdown Thursday is a more competitive event to stoke the flames of competition among FSU gamers. Competitive fighting games of all sorts are set up around the Cyber Café to play, like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Street Fight II, and so on. Different tournaments are also set up for the various games. Final Friday always happens on the last Friday of the month and is meant for the casual gamers among us. You’ll have your choice of Mario Kart, Guitar Hero, and many others to play.

That’s just a quick overview of some of the events the ASLC has to offer. At the risk of this article sounding like an ad for the place, it really is a great place to goof off and socialize, and part of that is thanks to the awesome events listed above.
