Holiday Party Accessories: Much More Than Your Typical Santa Hat

By Amanda Cohen on December 27, 2015

Even though on Christmas Day I can be found sitting in front of the fire wearing the pajamas that I sported from the night before, this is not acceptable attire for the holiday parties that accompany Christmas morning. Outfits for these gatherings can range anywhere from jeans and a sweater to a dress and tights; that’s pretty easy to figure out.

However, when it comes to accessorizing, people are usually at a loss because they don’t know what’s appropriate, what’s too much, or what’s too little. Here are a few items that will perfectly complete your future holiday party outfits.

Cuffs: Cuffs are not only trendy, but are the best type of jewelry because of their amazing variety. When I say variety, I am not talking about the fact that they come in all different colors and sizes.

Rather, I am talking about the fact that cuffs can be dressed up and dressed down. Whether you decide on a chunky gold piece to pair with a sweater or a gemstone-studded bracelet to wear with a dress, you can’t go wrong and you will get endless compliments on your style.

Ear-Crawlers: Ear-crawlers are fairly new, but that doesn’t make them any less stylish. For those of you who don’t know, ear-crawlers are earrings that hook into your first piercing and lightly rest on the circumference of your ear. Sounds weird, I know, but they are so fun to wear with any and all outfits.

If you are wearing red to get into Christmas spirit, I suggest going with a silver ear cuff. If you are going with more Autumn colors, go for gold or rose gold. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either so just choose what you think matches your outfit and your personality.

Fringe Necklaces: Most people don’t associate the words “fringe” and “necklace” with one another (including myself at one time). When I saw my friend Carly sporting a long necklace with a dark chain and grey fringe, I started warming up to the idea.

The added fabric to the necklace alludes to almost a sense of comfort that is cherished during the holiday season. The fringe screams New York Fashion Week – what more could you want?

Sheer Tights: I will never forget two years ago my mom told me to wear a black leather skirt with sheer, grey tights … I thought to myself who the heck wears tights after the age of eight?

Well, it turns out that lots of people do because it’s in style. Now, I am a firm believer of sheer tights and I love the chilly weather just so I have an excuse to wear them. Tights don’t have to be plain black or grey, you can get creative! I have a pair of burgundy tights that go great with a black shift dress I have hanging in my closet.

It is also fun to experiment with different patterns like floral or something more geometric.

Leather Jackets: Leather jackets are extremely trendy, and they keep your arms warm. Most outfits are even improved with the addition of this hardcore leather accessory. In everyday attire, cardigans usually are preferred over leather jackets, but the fancier, more special atmosphere of the holidays requires something a little nicer than your typical oversized cardigan, which is why leather jackets are the perfect accessory.

Just a word of advice, do not be afraid to wear a leather jacket that isn’t black. I am partial for olive green and burgundy jackets, so just remember to get creative!

Scarves: Scarves are not only meant to keep your neck and face warm when it’s cold outside, they also make great accessories for holiday parties. When choosing the perfect scarf to wear, I wouldn’t go for the usual wool scarf that you wear with your Canada Goose jacket in the winter.

I would go for something that is not as heavy and sports a fun color that adds some pizzazz to your outfit. I love charcoal scarves that have just a little bit of a metallic touch in the material, but you honestly can’t go wrong with anything that you choose. Just remember to pick a scarf that won’t have you scratching your neck and face all nice … style is important, but comfort trumps all.

Rings: Rings are great for any occasion, but even more so for a holiday party. When exchanging gifts or picking up the tongs to the different buffet items, you want your hands and fingers to look nice.

Since winter is a time for more neutral, darker colors, it doesn’t hurt to add some sparkle to your hands just so your outfit is a little more vibrant. Any and all rings are perfect for parties, so use your best judgment and choose a ring that compliments your finger shape and your outfit.

Even though I love all of the ideas above, my personal favorite holiday party accessory is a red Christmas hat. Remember, it may be the holidays, but stay true to your style and don’t wear anything that makes you uncomfortable or makes you feel like anyone other than yourself.

Happy holidays everyone!
